Anders Bill, M.D., Ph.D. was born in Falun, Sweden, 1931, went to school at Hudiksvall and studied Medicine at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. After some work at the Department of Anatomy, some clinical work in Surgery and a thesis in Physiology, he joined the Department of Pharmacology in 1962 and then returned as full Professor to the Department of Physiology in 1973. Teaching and administration were combined with research and training of Ph.D. students.
The blood circulation in the eye and brain, the nutrition of the retina, aqueous humor formation and drainage, and vascular permeability and tissue fluid dynamics in general have been his main themes.
Dr. Bill has has published about 190 articles and reviews in scientific journals and contributed to articles on blood flow regulation in the eye and aqueous humor dynamics in textbooks of Ophthalmology and Physiology. He has served on the Editorial Boards of Experimental Eye Research and Graefe´s Archive für Klinische und Experimentelle Ophthalmologie and still belongs to the Board of Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Research.
Dr. Bill has received the following awards and prizes: The Oscar Prize, 1968; The William MacKenzie Medal, 1974; Alcon Recognition Award, 1983; The Friedenwald Award, 1984; The Axel Hirsch Prize, 1989; The Balazs Prize, 1990; Alcon Recognition Award, 1993; The Eric K. Fernstrom Nordic Prize, 1994.
Dr. Bill enjoys nature and likes walking, skiing and skating. His wife, Inga, is an ophthalmologist and they have four children and eight grandchildren.
